Santa Ysabel
Wildlife Linkage Purpose: With the continued growth of Ramona, this wildlife linkage is increasingly important. Properties are now on the market which would help to ensure this wildlife linkage will remain open. We need to act now! |
Details: Upper Gorge to Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve Linkage The Upper San Diego River Gorge is truly spectacular. In the springtime, waterfalls tumble nearly a thousand feet to the valley floor and yet a cooling sea breaze is often felt in the afternoon. Warm Santa Ana winds blow and snow can fall in parts during the winter. Visit the view point at the Inaja Memorial Picnic Area to see this incredible vista. This area is special for wildlife, too. It has been proposed as a scientific study area as well as a Wild and Scenic River. It is home for a array of wildlife from the California gnatcatcher to the golden eagle; from the cougar to the fox; and the arroyo toad and Coronado skink. A very special area indeed! This area depends upon linkages to other protected areas such as the Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve for its long term survival. Wildlife must be able to move along the ground and in the air to these area. It is important for genetic diversity, food supply, and response to wildfires. The Santa Ysabel linkage is particularly at risk due to recently built homes in the area. But we can do something about it! Just a few properties need to be acquired to ensure this important linkage remains open. We have identified 3 properties for acquisition. We need to raise $20,000 immediately to pursue one of these properties that is on the market for less than $200,000. The $20,000 will serve as a 10% match for a grant to acquire this property. |
