THE RIVERWATCH TEAM
The San Diego River Park Foundation's RiverWatch Team helps to keep tabs on the health of the San Diego River

The Team uses a compact electronic sonde generously donated by Sontek/ YSI, to collect real-time data on the temperature, dissolved oxygen content, acidity or alkalinity, conductivity, and nutrient content of the River water at 15 different locations along the River. These parameters are used to provide a current picture of the state of the River water. The monthly monitoring results help provide an ongoing picture of how the River changes from season to season, and how that may affect the habitat, plants, and animals that live in and along the River.
The Team is currently expanding its outlook to include more monitoring parameters. Water quality measurements of phosphate and nitrates will now be taken on a monthly basis. The team has also started to document the presence of trash, invasive plants, butterflies and birds. Annual monitoring of benthic invertebrates will take place in a joint collaboration with the San Diego Stream Team. Thanks to the generosity of Sontek/ YSI the team has been given the opportunity to monitor flow along the San Diego River. Using Sontek’s Flow Tracker the Team will now be able to take detailed flow measurements along the River. A flow monitoring plan is currently being drafted and we hope to begin monitoring in late spring. If you are interested in learning more about the health of the River and the requirements to join the RiverWatch Team, please contact the RiverWatch Team Manager at 619-297-7380. |

Web-based Information Center
To make the data that is collected available to a larger audience, SDRPF is working to develop a web-based information center. The first phase of this project will soon be released.
