River Education Fund
Too often students are faced with obstacles which prevent them from learning about our natural environment.
We want to create a community partnership which supports students in learning about the San Diego River. We believe that this will foster understanding of the river, encourage students to continue their education and create a community that better cares for our wonderful natural resources, such as the river.
It is a relatively simple notion. But a profound one.
We hope you will join us in this effort.
The Fund was launched in February 2010 when Larry Bottroff donated his Stroud Award proceeds of $500 to start the fund. This fund will ultimately be used to support resident student researchers at the San Diego River Discovery Center. The other goal of the fund is to support school classes and youth groups with outings along the river. If you would like to be part of this program, please let us know.
UPCOMING EVENT: March 25th Happy Hour
Proceeds will go to the Education Fund. Details
Our goal is to expand this fund in time to serve several purposes. Programs can be designed to meet the needs of donors. Our initial goal is to raise $20,000.
Initial Programs Objectives
-
Stipends to enable and encourage short-term student river-related research projects
-
Support for student river outings, including transportation for groups or classes
-
Essential clothing, supplies and equipment for youth to participate in programs along the river
We are seeking businesses and others who want to partner with us on engaging students by providing these needed supplies. If a student or teacher contacts us and asks for help for a San Diego River project, we want to be able to do so and to have a network of people that are interested in helping.
Recently, we were contacted by a student who wanted to be part of our Bugs are Cool program but they didn't have a pair of waterproof boots to wear. For them this was a obstacle that didn't allow them to participate. How many others have the same challenge? Something as simple as a pair of hip waders or a pair of boots can open a world of science to a child. We invite you to join us in this effort.
