Peutz Creek Preserve Purpose: Location: |
About the Preserve Acquired in 2011, this 156 acre acquisition provides vital habitat for a number of wildlife species. It offers stunning views to El Capitan Reservoir and the surrounding landscape. This open land is part of Alpine's heritage. The land also serves to protect water quality of the reservoir, the City of San Diego's largest drinking water reservoir, and provides opportunities for trail connections to the future San Diego River Trail. We look forward to "getting to know the property" and welcome you to join us at future hikes and service projects. It is part of a regionally significant wildlife linkage to Harbison Canyon and points south. Thanks to a recent donation of a wildlife camera by a terrific friend of animals Chip Owen, we will be able to document deer, ring-tailed cats, and other species at the Preserve. We will be posting more information about the Preserve in the near future. Included will be the wonderful story of the previous owner of one of the parcels that makes up the preserve and her desires to conserve this property. It is a heartwarming story! |
FEATURE WILDLIFE: The ring-tailed cat is one of our favorite critters. It is one of two native species in the raccoon family in San Diego County. Their biology has changed so little over time they are sometimes referred to as "living fossils." Average life expectancy: 7 years |
